It's Atomic

Holiday workshops

Australian scientists have made discoveries that have changed the world - now it's time to inspire our next generation!

It’s Atomic Introduction - The World of Atoms
In this hands-on workshop, children discover the world of atoms - the tiny building blocks of everything around us. They will explore and physically feel the difference between different elements including gold, silver, magnesium, carbon, hydrogen and helium, interpret the Periodic Table (which is a kind of alphabet of the universe) and work with Atomic Numbers.

It’s Atomic Extension 1 - Atoms and Molecules
In this hands-on workshop, children discover how atoms combine together to form molecules and construct models of some essential molecules that support life here on earth.
Please note: Children need to have attended the It’s Atomic Introduction workshops in previous holiday programs before attending the Extension 1 workshop.
Brush up on ideas from It's Atomic Introduction before coming to Extension 1 - Introduction to the Periodic TableHow big is an Atom? and Introduction to Bonding.

It’s Atomic Extension 3 - Chemical Reactions
What is a chemical reaction and what makes certain chemicals react to form something new. Create your own chemical reactions, see demonstrations and observe what happens during a reaction. Some reactions may change colour while some chemicals will explode in front of your very eyes.
Please note: Children need to have attended the It’s Atomic Introduction workshops in previous holiday programs before attending the Extension 1 workshop.
Brush up on ideas from It's Atomic Extension 1 and prepare before coming to Extension 3 - Introduction to Bonding, Double and Triple Bonds, and Introduction to Chemical Reactions.

Everyone can learn Atomic Theory. When shared with children, they can have fun while developing an understanding of the world around them and getting a head start in their science education.  It's time to inspire our next generation of scientists.

It's Atomic Extension 2 workshop - Chemical Bonds is not on offer in July 2017.

Program background

These workshops were conceived by Ian Stuart, a science teacher who has adapted the teaching of Atomic Theory to younger children. Ian has been featured on ABC’s 7.30 Report for his ground breaking children’s program and his programs are being implemented in a number of Queensland primary schools as well as elementary schools in the Philippines. Ian has worked with Queensland Museum learning staff since 2013.
